Historic Fire Station No. 6 (est. 1903) continues to gain recognition throughout Houston, this time with the city's powerful business community.
The building was nominated recently by the Houston Business Journal for its Landmark Awards, which recognize "real estate projects that make a significant impression on the Houston landscape," according to HBJ's website. The current home of Axiom, Fire Station No. 6 was nominated in two categories -- Historic Renovation and Rehabilitation/Renovation. The station was one of three nominees in the former category, and one of four in the latter.
"While Fire Station 6 did not take the Landmark Award, I am still quite pleased that it was nominated as one of Houston's most influential real estate projects of 2013 and that HBJ included it on the cover of its special edition," said Tom Hair, president of Axiom, who was responsible for the six-year renovation of Fire Station No. 6.
Prior to the awards ceremony, Fire Station No. 6 was recognized by Preservation Houston with its prestigious 2013 Good Brick Award. Momentum was building for the station as the Landmark nominations placed Fire Station No. 6 among elite Houston real estate projects, most of which involved larger buildings. Awards notwithstanding, Fire Station No. 6 remains a vibrant symbol of Houston history in the Sixth Ward. The building's significance resonates with many Houstonians who drive past it on Washington Avenue, and with Houston firefighters who make impromptu visits en route to downtown. Fire Station No. 6 has become "the people's choice" since its six-year restoration was completed in February 2012.
